Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice-presidential running mate in the November 5 United States election, sources revealed on Tuesday.

An official announcement is expected later on Tuesday.

Walz, a 60-year-old former U.S. Army National Guard member and teacher, was elected to Congress in 2006 and served for 12 years before becoming governor of Minnesota in 2018. As governor, Walz has promoted progressive policies such as free school meals, climate change initiatives, tax cuts for the middle class, and expanded paid leave.

Harris, the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, aims to boost her appeal in crucial battleground states with Walz on her ticket.

Walz was chosen over Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, considered crucial for delivering Pennsylvania’s electoral votes, and Arizona’s Senator Mark Kelly.

Harris took over the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden quit his re-election pursuit last month. The current vice president, Harris, has significantly boosted her campaign with solid fundraising and party support.

She and Walz are expected to appear together at an event in Philadelphia on Tuesday evening.
