Nigeria’s’ Vice President, Kashim Shettima, said the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration is committed to combating corruption, revitalizing the economy, improving national security, and ensuring judicial independence. He made this statement on Monday during a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, held in Abuja.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Political Issues, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Shettima acknowledged the challenges facing Nigeria’s’ democracy but reaffirmed the government’s determination to deliver on its promises.

However, the Vice President’s’ remarks come amid rising criticism over the substantial funds allocated for renovating the Vice Presidential residence. Given Nigeria’s’ current economic hardships and worsening insecurity, many see this move as tone-deaf.

Also, the recent killings in Borno State, Shettima’s’ home state, have raised questions about the administration’s capacity to tackle insurgency and secure lives and property. Some Nigerians have accused the government of misplaced priorities, focusing on political infrastructure while parts of the country remain besieged by insecurity.

Shettima appealed for patience and unity from Nigerians, urging them to support the administration on its “challenging but ultimately rewarding journey.”

The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, and Development organized the conference, “Strengthening Nigeria’s’ Democracy: Pathways to Good Governance and Political Integrity. ”
