The Flying Eagles of Nigeria began their campaign for the eighth U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title on a winning note, edging Tunisia 1-0 in Group B encounter at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium in Cairo on Thursday.

A decisive 38th-minute strike from Auwal Ibrahim, following an assist by Odinaka Okoro, enough to secure all three points for Nigeria in a match defined by physical duels, tactical discipline, and late drama.

Nigeria started the game on the front foot, dominating possession and creating early chances. Their persistence paid off when Okoro delivered a precise pass that Ibrahim converted with composure from close range. The goal was a rare moment of clarity in a contest that often saw both sides locked in midfield battles.

Tunisia, known for their resilience and pedigree, having reached the semi-finals in the last two editions, responded with urgency. Omar Ben Ali and Anis Doubal tested Nigeria’s backline, but goalkeeper Chijioke Anigbata and defenders Daniel Bameyi and Adamu Maigari held firm. Doubal came closest to an equaliser in the 87th minute, but his effort was calmly gathered by Anigbata.

Midfielders Divine Oliseh and Clinton Jephta were instrumental in maintaining Nigeria’s control for large spells, despite the second half being marked by a scrappier, more physical style. The match saw six yellow cards evenly distributed, underlining the growing tension as the clock ticked down.

With Morocco and Kenya also in the group, Nigeria’s opening victory provides a crucial advantage. The win also extends their impressive record in tournament openers, unbeaten in eight of their last ten U-20 AFCON debuts.
