The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Recall that he stated last Thursday that he does not lack the experience to contest the governorship race in the state, just as he noted that he had not given serious thought to becoming the next governor “as was already being speculated.”

To the blackmailers who have embarked on the mission to distort and redefine our mission, let me state it unequivocally here, our intention is to promote our party on the platform of Mandate. Also, becoming governor is secondary; it is something that I have not given serious consideration. Nevertheless, that does not mean I am too young or lack experience to run; whereas, those who have been before me are not better off, he stated in his remarks shortly after Gov. Sanwo-Olu presented the state’s 2025 budget.

Obasa, who has been in charge of the Assembly since 2015, represents Agege Constituency 1. He was first elected a lawmaker in 2007.

I have made it a personal task to mobilise people on the platform of Mandate, which some political detractors misconstrue as a selfish aspiration to become governor. Let me state unequivocally: my focus is on strengthening our party, Obasa continued.

Following his removal, the Assembly hurriedly swore as the new Speaker in Mojisola Meranda, Obasa’s deputy and the representative of Apapa Constituency 1. Her appointment makes her the first female Lagos State House of Assembly speaker.

Obasa’s impeachment also comes amid longstanding allegations of financial misconduct. In 2020, reports surfaced accusing him of operating over 60 bank accounts linked to his Bank Verification Number (BVN). The accounts, reportedly under various names and spread across multiple banks, were allegedly used to divert public funds.

Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) also invited Obasa to question him about allegations of fraud and financial impropriety, which he denied.

However, the speaker’s outburst about being qualified to contest the next governorship election follows reports that Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, was endorsed by some groups as the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2027 elections.
