Idris Elba Unveils Vision for Eco-Friendly ‘Smart City’ Project in Sierra Leone’s Sherbro Island

Hollywood actor Idris Elba has a bold vision for Sierra Leone, his father’s homeland. He plans to transform Sherbro Island, an idyllic location off the West African nation’s coast, into a sustainable “smart city.”

From Boutique Hotel to Eco-City

Elba initially envisioned boosting tourism through a boutique hotel project. However, in collaboration with childhood friend Siaka Stevens (grandson of a former Sierra Leonean president), the idea evolved into a more ambitious eco-friendly development plan.

The Sherbro Island City project prioritizes sustainability. A key feature is a wind and solar farm financed through a partnership with Octopus Energy Generation. This renewable energy source is a first for Sierra Leone.

Elba emphasizes self-reliance and economic growth for the region. Sherbro Island City is envisioned as a special economic zone, attracting businesses and fostering long-term development.

Despite the large-scale plans, maintaining the island’s natural beauty is paramount. Elba assures minimal disruption to the environment and a focus on preserving the island’s character.

The project is a public-private partnership, bringing together expertise from various firms. Lloyds will handle financial aspects, while Sasaki Associates and Foster & Partners will oversee design and architecture. Transportation planning and climate change considerations are also addressed through partnerships with MIC-HUB and PRDW.

Elba acknowledges the project’s ambitious nature, citing similar African initiatives that haven’t fully materialized. However, his focus goes beyond profit. He aspires to create a functional and sustainable city, honouring his heritage and his late father’s values.

Building on a Dream

Elba acknowledges the challenges but remains enthusiastic. He sees this project as a way to inspire others and redefine perceptions of Africa, showcasing its potential for self-driven development. With a strong team and a clear vision, Sherbro Island City aims to become a beacon of innovation and sustainability in Sierra Leone.
