Governor of Kogi State announced the establishment of the State’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

He said this initiative aligns with the overarching vision encapsulated in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s RenewedHope agenda, which aims to uplift 50 million Nigerians from poverty annually.

Governor Bello made this announcement at the official launch of the Federal Government’s Grant for Vulnerable program at the Government House in Lokoja. Bello, in a statement issued in Lokoja by his Media Aide, Oogwu Muhammed, emphasized the meticulous attention given to the necessary legal framework and legislative authority for the creation of the ministry, underscoring its significance in addressing poverty challenges in the state.

The Grant for Vulnerable Groups, a pivotal component of this initiative, aims to provide economic relief to the most disadvantaged members of society by disbursing a cash sum of N20,000 to beneficiaries.

Governor Bello commended President Tinubu’s visionary approach and genuine commitment to poverty eradication, highlighting the grant’s potential to significantly impact the administration’s goal of lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

Highlighting the strides taken within Kogi State, Governor Bello outlined various initiatives aimed at poverty reduction. These encompass free education in primary and secondary schools, quarterly food palliatives distribution, and a free healthcare program for pregnant women and children.

Furthermore, the government shoulders examination fees for public school students, exemplified by the recent N497 million disbursed for the 2024 WAEC fees.

Governor Bello expressed confidence in Governor-elect Ahmed Usman Ododo’s ability to build upon these achievements and foster stronger collaborations with federal and local governments for comprehensive welfare enhancements.

At the ceremony, Dr Betta Edu, the Honourable Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, lauded the beneficiaries and acknowledged the relentless support of Kogi women for the APC-led administration at both federal and state levels.

She highlighted that beyond the Grant for Vulnerable Groups, the Federal Government has implemented over 20 social programs targeting poverty alleviation, food security, and human capital development.
