Production has commenced on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” spinoff series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” in Belfast, Ireland. The series, adapted from George R. R. Martin’s novella “The Hedge Knight,” will explore the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, set a century before the events of “Game of Thrones” and 100 years after “House of the Dragon.”

Joining the cast are five notable actors: Finn Bennett, known for his role in “True Detective: Night Country,” Bertie Carvel from “The Crown,” Tanzyn Crawford of “Tiny Beautiful Things,” Daniel Ings from “Sex Education,” and Sam Spruell of “Fargo.” These actors will portray significant characters from the Targaryen dynasty and other key figures in the story. Bennett will play Prince Aerion Targaryen, Carvel is cast as Prince Baelor Targaryen, Spruell will take on the role of Prince Maekar Targaryen, Ings will portray Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Crawford will play a puppeteer named Tanselle.

Directing duties for the six-episode first season will be split between Sarah Adina Smith and executive producer Owen Harris. Smith will direct three episodes, while Harris will helm the remaining three.

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is written and executive produced by George R. R. Martin and Ira Parker, with additional executive production by Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw. The series will delve into the early days of Westeros, showcasing a young, courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), and his diminutive squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), as they encounter members of the Targaryen family and other notable characters on their journey to a tournament.

The official logline for the series is: “A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
