Burkina Faso Foiled Attempt To Destabilise Country, Says Security Minister

Burkina Faso’s military government has foiled a subversive attempt against the country by individual saboteurs residing in the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire and Niger.

The nation’s security minister, Mahamadou Sana, revealed this on Monday during a National broadcast on RTB (Radiodiffusion Télévision du Burkina), he named 14 individuals for organising a destabilisation plot against the country.

The 14 persons included the leader of the January 2022 coup Ahmed Kinda, former commander of the special forces, two former ministers, two journalists and unidentified conspirators with ties with Western intelligence officials.

The Minister also said an “elaborate three-phased plot” was devised by some Burkinabé civilians and servicemen residing abroad who paid and trained armed groups to conduct attacks against the country.

The first phase of the alleged plot was the Jihadi attack that killed at least 100 civilians in central Burkina Faso. The second phase included attacks on the presidential palace, a military drone base, and an airport.

Sana said the third plot was the attacks near the Ivory Coast border, stating that the three phases were prevented.

He further reiterated that the government has launched a special anti-terrorist operation aimed at neutralising any remaining threats while warning that such destabilisation attempts will no longer be allowed.

Sana also urged the families of the plotters to denounce them and distance themselves from their subversive activities against the country.
