A member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has been identified as one of the seven persons who died in a stampede during a rush for discounted rice in Lagos.

The deceased APC member, identified as Adebanjo Comfort Funmilayo from Surulere, was in Ward E1, living at Ibidun Street by Akinhanmi Street, Ojuelegba.

The ugly incident reportedly happened on Friday, Feb. 23, at the Nigeria Customs Service office in Yaba, when a large crowd trying to buy the subsidised rice led to a deadly stampede.

In response to the economic challenges facing many citizens, the Nigeria Customs Service announced Thursday, Feb. 22, that it has started distributing seized food items, including rice, to people in need.

According to the comptroller-general of customs, Wale Adeniyi, during the flag-off of the rice distribution in Lagos, the initiative was aimed at assisting various groups such as artisans, teachers, and religious organizations, especially those in customs operational areas and border communities.
