Burkinabè Government Condemns U.S. General’s Claim That Burkina Faso’s Partnership with Russia Harms Citizens’ Interests

The government of Burkina Faso has strongly criticised recent comments made by U.S. General Michael Langley, Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM). General Langley made these remarks during a hearing before the U.S. Senate on 3 April.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabè Abroad, the government strongly objected to the AFRICOM commander’s remarks. It described his statements as “unjustified” and “politically biased.” General Langley had questioned Burkina Faso’s current foreign partnerships and suggested that the country’s policy decisions were not in the best interests of its people.
During the Senate hearing, General Langley talked about the growing presence of Russian entities in African countries, particularly the Wagner Group. He argued that such partnerships may not benefit local populations and could create long-term risks to regional stability.
Burkina Faso firmly rejected these claims. The government remains committed to combating corruption and defending national interests. It also pointed to ongoing improvements in key sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, and security.
The Foreign Ministry pointed out the achievements of the country’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS), working alongside the Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland (VDP). These groups have made significant progress in pushing back terrorist groups and restoring stability to areas affected by insecurity.
The statement concluded with a call for mutual respect and upholding national sovereignty in international relations. It urged partners, including the United States, to engage through proper diplomatic channels and to maintain respectful and constructive dialogue. Burkina Faso and its allies in the Confederation of Sahel States (CSS) reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation based on equality and sovereignty.
