The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the detention and commencement of investigation into the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl by one of its officers stationed at Area H Command in Ogudu.

The incident allegedly occurred on Saturday, July 13, when the girl went to report a case of a stolen phone to the station.

On Sunday, the Lagos command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, (CP) Adegoke Fayoade, has directed a “full-scale and thorough investigation” into the allegation.

Despite not disclosing the identity of the accused officer, Hundeyin denied subsequent allegations indicating a cover-up, adding that the officer turned himself in.

He reassured the public that the incident would be handled transparently. “There is no attempt at a cover-up as such hideous acts are at variance with the code of conduct and professional ethics of the Nigeria Police Force.”

He added that Adegoke had assured Nigerians that the officer would be dealt with in accordance with police regulations and the law if found guilty.

Meanwhile, The officer’s offences include rape, sexual assault, and indecent practices, all punishable under the Child’s Rights Law of Lagos State (2015) and the Criminal Law of Lagos State (2015).
