The former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, on Friday, said Nigeria has become a complete disgrace and laughing stock to the whole world as it has devolved into a war zone where citizens kill each other.

Gen. Danjuma said this while speaking at the opening ceremony of the Nwonyo International Fishing and Cultural Festival in the Ibi local government area of Taraba state. He called on citizens to stop killing each other and make the roads and homes safe for development to thrive.

In his words:

“There is no sane foreign person that will come to Nigeria to celebrate with us if we continue to kill each other if we continue to butcher each other and make our roads unsafe for people to move around.

“As we are today in Nigeria, we are a disgrace to the whole world. The whole country is at a war front of people against our people.

“We must put our own house in order because right now we are a laughing stock to the whole world. We must stop killing each other. We must make our roads safe, our homes safe, and stop kidnapping. May Almighty God continue to be with us as we try to put our house in order.

“Let us renew our commitment to promoting peace and harmony and celebrate the bonds that unite us as one family,” he said, stressing that the festival is not just about displaying Jukun cultural values but also about bringing together different communities.

General Danjuma praised the Taraba state government for returning the festival after 14 years and encouraged ongoing efforts to make it successful.

Also, Adamawa state governor Umar Fintiri, in his speech, called the event a unifying force among neighbouring states, pledging support to ensure the international fishing festival thrives in collaboration with Taraba state.

Meanwhile, Taraba state governor Dr Agbu Kefas said he reinstated the Nwonyo International Fishing and Cultural Festival to showcase Taraba’s cultural richness to the world.

He promised his administration to identify and revive all cultural festivals that once united various ethnic groups across the state.
