A 188-megawatt Geometric Power Plant will be commissioned in Abia on February 26, 2024, to boost the region’s power generation.

The commissioning of the plant, situated in the Osisioma Industrial Layout of Aba in Abia State, will mark a crucial development for Abia’s infrastructure and economic growth.

Originally set for inauguration on February 24, the commissioning date was moved to Monday, February 26, following a decision by The Presidency.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to preside over the ceremony, joined by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti. Tinubu would commission the multi-million-dollar 188MW thermal plant alongside Aba Power Limited, which will supply electricity from the new plant to nine of the 17 local government areas in Abia State.

Geometric Power reportedly invested $800 million in this integrated power project, which included building a 27-kilometre natural gas pipeline and extensive cable installations. The pipeline extends from Owaza in Ukwa West LGA in Abia State to the Osisioma Industrial Layout in Aba.

“We have, in addition, installed 150,000 kilometers of cables and wires and installed four new power substations as well as refurbished three others inherited from the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN”, Ben Caven, the Managing Director of Geometric Power Ltd, explained.

Though the plant is aimed at improving the power supply needs of the nine local councils that form the Aba Ring Fence of the operational area of the company, its significance extends beyond Aba.

Prof. Bath Nnaji, Chairman and founder of Geometric Power, expressed confidence in the Plant’s ability to improve power supply across Nigeria. The three turbines, each generating 47 megawatts, are expected to contribute significantly to the National Grid.

The commissioning is set to occur in stages, starting with the first turbine on Monday, February 26. To ensure transparency and improve customer service, Geometric has initiated a mass metering campaign. The company is reportedly providing prepaid meters to individuals and corporate bodies at no cost.
